The existing building, an old raisin-warehouse, is situated on the base of the historical wall’s 2nd bastion in Heraklion city. The building is listed because of its external shell. The museum interacts with the historical wall and the hill. The external space of the new building is integrated to the promenade along the historical wall.

The demolition of the internal structures and the position of a new independent structure inside the existing stonewall, is proposed. The new building is placed behind the stonewall. The ‘epidermis’ (concrete reinforced walls) is part of the structural system and α second skin (corten panels) forms the new facade of the building. The existing shell and the metal facade create a unique volume.

The main program of the museum is organized on the ground floor (foyer, art-shop, auditorium, exhibition spaces) and the first floor (exhibition spaces). The cafe-restaurant and auxiliary spaces are placed on an intermediate level. The cafe offers an excellent view to the wall. The existing stone-shell creates a spiral. On the parallelogram part of this spiral, the outline of 3 ‘boxes’ organizes the space (containers of the main functions). The trapezoid shape of the spiral serves for circulation, connections and views. The exhibition space is highly flexible. Panels can be placed on the outline of the ‘boxes’ creating variety on exhibition spaces.
